How to get started with the basics of programming

It’s intimidating to listen to “code” or “programming being discussed for the first time, especially in the case that it’s not something you are familiar with.

Programming is typically thought of from an engineering/coding point of view.

This is a typical pattern. People will talk about languages and how much they know instead of talking about a particular process. Every person speaks a different language fluently, so there’s nothing wrong with this. It can be confusing for beginners, however, if they become too focused on the details.

What is the code?

A code is basically an arrangement of instructions that are given to a computer. The compiler takes these instructions, and then gives the computer instructions to follow in order to accomplish an action. The “something” could range including displaying text on a display or adding two numbers together. The code only exists as text files, which can be executed by different applications (more on this in the future).

It’s code because the programming language that holds instructions could be hidden. It must make sense to computers, but not to humans. There are many tutorials on coding which can be written in another language. These tutorials are simply text that’s human-readable however, they don’t mean anything until they’re actually seen or heard by speakers.

It’s not a good idea to instantly think of an equation when someone mentions “code”. Consider running text files or commands instead!

If you have some knowledge about Code and have a solid idea of how you can approach the existing code, this is a great way to start with it. You can use one of the numerous tutorials for programming that are available, or perform your own Google search if you want to master the basics of a new language. This will allow you to grasp the basics of programming and give you a taste of what it is similar to before you get started!

Be aware that these programs are typically simplified (which is understandable since they’re “tutorials”) however they will show you what programs are like inside.

This is the perfect place to start if you are a beginner!

Here’s an example of code from an elementary Python tutorial is like:

print “Hello World!”

This is the first line from the famous “Hello World” program. This is the standard for beginners and can help you learn the fundamentals of programming. It informs the computer what information to print following the “:” symbol on the screen or from a text file you have saved to your hard drive. This isn’t actually how all programming languages function, but it would be the perfect way to introduce some basics.

The only way to learn to program is through practice! The more you code, more efficient you’ll be. This article was written by those who are just beginning to learn programming.
